Why Publish a Presentation to the Web?
A PowerPoint presentation is a great way to present material on a web site
Viewers enjoy the “show”
You can offer training or customer support
A presentation is ideal for systematically delivering information to your viewers
Which Format to Use
Internet Explorer 4.0 or later
Retains transitions, animation (builds), sounds, etc.
Viewers can view your presentation full-screen
Disadvantage: Viewers using Netscape or earlier versions of Internet Explorer don’t see the effects
Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later
Loses many special effects
Still get good basic presentation, more people can view it
All browsers listed above
Capabilities of both the previous options
Disadvantage: Creates many more and larger files
Steps to Publish: Starting
Choose File | Save as Web Page to open this dialog box
Steps to Publish: Naming
In File Name textbox, type a name
By default, PowerPoint uses the name of the presentation. Check if your web host or Intranet allows spaces!
PowerPoint also creates a sub-folder containing all the other files associated with the presentation
If you want the Web page title to be different from the filename, click Change Title
The Web page title is the text that appears in the title bar of your Web browser.
Search engines use this title to search the Web.
In the Page Title box, type the new title, and click OK
Steps to Publish: Defining
Click Publish to open the Publish as Web Page dialog box
Steps to Publish: Scope
In the Publish What? section, specify if you want to publish the entire presentation, certain slides, or a custom show (if available)
Steps to Publish: Options
Click Web Options to open the Web Options dialog box, shown here
Steps to Publish: Settings
On the General tab of the Web Options dialog box, check Add Slide Navigation Controls to include the outline/notes panes, and navigational arrows. (The notes pane won’t appear if you unchecked Display Speaker Notes earlier.) Viewers can use the outline pane to navigate around your presentation.
Choose a color option for the outline pane from the Color drop-down list. The two presentation colors options work well.
You can disable slide animation (builds).
You can also disable the automatic resizing of graphics to fit the browser window.
Steps to Publish: Settings II
The Files tab of the Web Options dialog box offers options for the names and location of the files that PowerPoint creates.
Use the Pictures tab to specify the screen resolution.
If you know the screen resolution of your viewers' monitors (as on an Intranet), set it here.
If you are publishing to the Web, try different resolutions and view them with different browsers to see the results. The default is 800x600, fine for the majority of Web users.
Steps to Publish: Settings III
The Encoding tab offers the option to save in various versions of Windows, DOS, and other operating systems. Use this if text and symbols are not properly readable from your browser.
When you're done setting the Web options, click OK to return to the Publish as Web Page dialog box.
Steps to Publish: Publishing
In the Browser Support section of the Publish as Web Page dialog box, choose the type of Web format you want to create. (See slide 3 for a description.)
In the Publish a Copy As section, you have another opportunity to change the filename and text title.
Check Open Published Web Page in Browser to open the presentation in your browser immediately after publishing it.
Click Publish. PowerPoint works for a couple of seconds to create the new files. You’ve done it!
Steps to Publish: Uploading
Look at the files PowerPoint created. You have the main HTML (.htm) file where you saved it. (Unless you changed it, the file’s name is the same as your presentation.) In a subfolder are all the rest of the files.
You must recreate this structure on your web site.
Upload the main HTML file to your web site.
Create a folder on your web site using the same name as the folder PowerPoint created on your hard drive.
Upload all the files in that folder to the new folder on your web site.
Steps to Publish: Viewing
You should now be able to view your presentation by opening your browser and typing the URL of the main HTML file.
This main file automatically uses the rest of the files in the subfolder.
Click on each slide just as you normally do in Slide Show view. (You may need to click the Full Screen button at the bottom right.) Enjoy the show!
