Change a picture in PowerPoint 2007 and 2010

PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 have a feature that makes creating similar slides a snap: Change picture. You can duplicate a slide and easily change its picture without deleting the old one or fiddling with the side or placing.

This feature is ideal for creating product brochures and facilitates customizing presentations for multiple customers.

Animate an image from color to black & white

On the popular TV show, NCIS, scenes end with a still shot that starts in color and then becomes black & white. In a discussion on the LinkedIn group, Great Communicators! Effective Presenting & PowerPoint, this technique was suggested as a fun section transition for a presentation.

Here’s how the technique looks:

Create a quiz game

Whether for work or play, quiz games are fun. Jeopardy-like games or just quizzes can teach and entertain at the same time.

(Note that “Jeopardy” is a trademark of Sony Pictures, and shouldn’t be used without permission.)

You can use exit animation and a trigger to create the quiz so that when you click [...]

Presentation styles

Recently, I’ve seen some articles on presentation styles.

For example, take a look at a presentation by Dick Hardt of Sxip Identity. If you’re interested in looking at an excellent presentation, watch this one. His slides are very simple; this is sometimes called the Takahashi or Lessig method. The method can be summed up [...]

Magnify an image

John Ringold e-mailed me asking how to enlarge part of an image that is encircled within an oval.

Do you see how the shadow is contoured around the shape of the tulip? Did you know that you can do this [...]

3D and reflection technique

Mark James Normand has started a new blog, Presentation Design, which includes a very nice technique using a gradient background, 3D placement of objects, and reflections. Here’s the sample slide that he creates:

The slide incorporates 3 elements:

Importing a PowerPoint presentation into Flash

In my Putting Flash animation in PowerPoint tip, I explain how to bring a Flash movie into PowerPoint, but how about bringing a PowerPoint presentation into Adobe Flash? You can’t do it directly, but you can save the files in WMF format and import them into Flash.

This method does not preserve any [...]

Create section markers

A complex presentation may be divided into several sections. In order to help your audience understand where the current slide fits in the whole structure, you can create section markers that appear throughout the presentation. Each slide displays all of the section names, but the current section is bold, or a different color, so [...]

Protect a PowerPoint file from changes

Many people need to protect PowerPoint files from changes. There are several reasons for this:

To send presentations for review only (but not editing) To maintain ownership of the creative content For legal reasons (for example, if the content has been approved by legal and financial counsel and may not be changed) To [...]
