Remove an image background in PowerPoint

One of the features of PowerPoint 2010 and later is the ability to remove the background of an image. This is different from making one color in the background transparent, which you can do in earlier versions. (I describe that process in a tip, “Cool contour shadows.”)

PowerPoint 2010 lets you specify which parts of the image you want to keep or discard. It doesn’t always work perfectly, but for the right image — usually one with clear outlines — it’s a great tool.

Watch how it works.

Thanks, Ellen. You did a great job of explaining and showing how to do this with 2010. As a college professor, your work is extremely helpful; I just wish more of my colleagues would put more effort into their presentations. Bravo!

Thanks for your kind comment! I have a talk that I’ve given to college professors that will help them make their presentations much more effective for learning outcomes — and the students will appreciate the results, too. If you think you can arrange a workshop, please let me know. Just click the Contact link on my website.

Thank you for sharing this great information. I’ll try them and see how they go. I also wanted to share an automatic photo background remover and it works great too. It’s “https://removal.ai”. I believe it will help you too.
